Vieques 2.0.0: rebuilt from scratch, 5 times smaller
Vieques 2.0.0 is out for Windows on itch.io and Game Jolt. Same game: a boat, 14 minefields, hearts and radars to earn. Under the hood, everything is new.
From GameMaker to raylib
Versions 1.0 and 1.0.1 were made in GameMaker. For 2.0.0 the whole game was rewritten in C++ with raylib, a small open-source library for making games, the same move Chupacabras made. Every screen came along: the splash, the disclaimer, the title with its rippling water, the map, the minefields, the CLEAR!, GAME OVER and YOU WIN banners, the pause menu, the score table and the credits. Even GameMaker's water filters were rebuilt as the game's own shaders.
5 times smaller
| 1.0.1 (GameMaker) | 2.0.0 (raylib) | |
|---|---|---|
| Download | 59.2 MB | 11.6 MB |
| On disk | 69.9 MB: an .exe and a data file | 13.6 MB: one .exe |
The art, sound effects and music all live inside a single Vieques.exe. Nothing to install: unzip it and play.
What's new
- New default keyboard controls. The old Q / W / E / R keys are now Z to look under a tile, X to flag, V for the radar and C to pause. On a gamepad, Flag moved to the left face button, next to Look. Every control can still be changed in the options.
- Window size on F4 and F5. The biggest size is fullscreen, and the game always scales by whole numbers, so the pixels stay sharp. F3 resets all options, F1 the controls.
- The disclaimer, checked. The note about the real Vieques now says "from the 1940s to 2003", after checking the dates against the Navy's own cleanup pages, and it's shorter.
- The score table says how many of the 14 minefields you cleared. It used to say "/ 20".
- Fixes: the menu's mines sit at the same distance on both sides of the selected option, half-transparent art no longer draws darker than it should, the YOU WIN message lost a typo, and the GAME OVER letters were redrawn.
Your old saves
2.0.0 keeps its options and high scores in Documents\CoquibyteGames\Vieques, so it starts with a fresh score table.
